Coming into the valley from the east on I-70, you’ll drop into gorgeous East Vail. A residential neighborhood surrounded by the White River National Forest, offering an abundance of hiking trails in the summer and snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and ice climbing in the winter. East Vail is 5 miles from Vail’s two village areas where chair lifts and the gondola can be accessed. Vail’s free shuttle system runs through East Vail and will drop off in Vail Village, the hub of activity for the area. Also, located in East Vail is a small market, liquer store and one restaurant at the popular Vail Racquet Club, which offers accommodations as well as an athletic facility including tennis and racquet ball courts.

Lionshead:

Lionshead Village, another pedestrian mall located about 3/4 mile west of Vail Village, features shops, restaurants, lodges and the Vail Valley’s only gondola. The Eagle Bahn Gondola is open in both the winter and summer to provide the fastest and most comfortable passage up Vail Mountain. The bulk of Vail’s lodging accommodations that are within walking distance can be found in Lionshead. Be sure to check out the beginings of Vail’s Billion Dollar Renewal, which will result in a new village in Lionshead, to be completed in 2008. Vail Village can be accessed by foot or by Vail’s FREE in town shuttle system that runs every 5 – 10 minutes.

Area information

Vail: Vail was named after state highway engineer Charlie Vail, who built the first highway through the area. The mountain was “discovered” in the mid-1950s by 10th Mountain Division trooper Peter Seibert and local rancher Earl Eaton. When Seibert and Eaton hiked to the top of the mountain they looked out upon the vast open bowls and realized it was the perfect spot for ski slopes. In January 1962, their dream came alive and the U.S. Forest Service granted the final permit to Seibert and Eaton. Vail opened in December of the same year and eventually grew to become the largest ski area in North America.

Vail Golf Course: As you head towards the village areas, you will pass the Vail Golf Course, which is located just one mile east of Vail Village on the South side of I-70. This area offers a beautiful residential area with limited lodging rentals that can be accessed by the free bus service. The Vail Golf Club is a par 71 championship public course at 8,200 feet elevation.
